    Συνέντευξη με την Jennifer Donnelly

    Συνέντευξη: Μαργαρίτα Κατσίπη

    Πιστεύω ακράδαντα πως  οι συγγραφείς  χαρίζουν απλόχερα  ένα κομμάτι από την ψυχή τους  στους αναγνώστες μέσω των κειμένων τους. Αυτό νιώθω κάθε φορά που διαβάζω τα βιβλία της  Jennifer Donnelly.

    Υπήρξαν μια  σταθερή  συντροφιά για μένα καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια των ετών, επειδή στέκονται σαν φάρος για να μου  υποδείξουν την πορεία που πρέπει να ακολουθήσω όταν το ταξίδι της ζωής  κάποιες φορές μοιάζει με θυελλώδη ωκεανό. Ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο είναι Το Τριανταφυλλάκι  το όποιο δεν σταμάτησα να το διαβάζω μέχρι να το τελειώσω. Το ίδιο ακριβώς συνέβη και με τα επόμενα δυο βιβλία της τριλογίας  Το Τριαντάφυλλο του Χειμώνα, Το Άγριο Τριαντάφυλλο και αργότερα με τo  Επαναστατημένες  Ζωές.

    Το 2003, το μυθιστόρημά της Το Βόρειο Σέλας κέρδισε το βραβείο Carnegie της Βρετανίας, το  Printz Honor στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής.  Το Lost in a Book, δημοσιεύθηκε τον Ιανουάριο του 2017 και πέρασε τέσσερις μήνες στη λίστα των bestseller των New York Times.

    Σήμερα λοιπόν είναι μεγάλη τιμή να φιλοξενώ την ευπώλητη συγγραφέα των New York Times, κυρία Jennifer Donnelly  στην ιστοσελίδα  μας για μια μικρή συνέντευξη και μια παρουσίαση των πιο πρόσφατων βιβλίων της.

    Συνέντευξη

    Γράφετε για γυναικείους χαρακτήρες με εσωτερική δύναμη, ποιες συμβουλές θα έδιναν σε μια νεαρή κοπέλα που αντιμετωπίζει έναν κόσμο γεμάτο δυσκολίες καθώς μεγαλώνει;

    J.D.: Νομίζω ότι οι ισχυροί γυναικείοι μου χαρακτήρες θα έλεγαν στους αναγνώστες ότι δεν ήταν πάντα τόσο ισχυροί και ότι αυτή η δύναμη δεν είναι κάτι με το οποίο γεννιέσαι, είναι κάτι που αποκτάς.

    Οι χαρακτήρες μου έχουν ελαττώματα, όπως όλοι κάνουμε. Κάνουν λάθη. Κάνουν κακές επιλογές. Πέφτουν. Αποτυγχάνουν. Αλλά δεν σταματούν όταν αποτυγχάνουν. Δεν παραιτούνται. Σηκώνονται. Και αυτό κάνει όλη τη διαφορά.

    Ποια ήταν η καλύτερη φιλοφρόνηση και η πιο σκληρή κριτική που έδωσαν σε εσάς ως συγγραφέα και πώς το αντιμετωπίζετε;

    J.D.: Η καλύτερη φιλοφρόνηση είναι όταν κάποιος που έχει τελειώσει ένα από τα βιβλία μου λέει “δεν ήμουν αναγνώστης, αλλά η ιστορία σου άλλαξε αυτό. Τώρα μου αρέσει να διαβάζω.” Νιώθω σαν να έχω σκοτώσει δέκα δράκους όταν συμβαίνει αυτό!

    Η πιο σκληρή κριτική, και νομίζω ότι αυτό ισχύει για πολλούς συγγραφείς, προέρχεται από μέσα. Είναι αυτή η φωνή που σας λέει πάντα, “Η πλοκή δεν είναι αρκετά καλή. Η ιστορία δεν είναι αρκετά καλή. Δεν είσαι αρκετά καλός.” Με παραλύει. Και τότε με τρελαίνει. Και τότε με κάνει καλύτερη.

    Ποιοι είναι μερικοί από τους αγαπημένους σας συγγραφείς που αισθάνεστε ότι είχαν επιρροή στη δουλειά σας; Τι αντίκτυπο έχουν στη γραφή σας;
    J.D.: Μερικοί από τους αγαπημένους μου είναι ο James Joyce, ο Jeanette Winterson, ο John Le Carre, ο Graham Greene, ο Toni Morrison, η Laura Ingalls Wilder, η Emily Dickinson, η Mary Oliver, η Angela Carter, η A.S. Byatt. Δεν μπορώ να επισημάνω συγκεκριμένα παραδείγματα των αντικτύπου τους  στην δουλειά μου. Είναι περισσότερο το ότι είναι τόσο καλοί συγγραφείς και η δουλειά τους με συγκίνησε τόσο βαθιά, αισθάνομαι μια τεράστια αίσθηση δέους, ευγνωμοσύνης και χρέους προς αυτούς. Με κάνει να θέλω να δουλέψω πιο σκληρά, να σκάψω βαθύτερα και να βελτιώσω τη δική μου γραφή.

    Θα εξετάζατε τη συνεργασία με άλλους συγγραφείς για ένα νέο μυθιστόρημα, για το οποίο θα θέλατε να συνεργαστείτε και νομίζετε ότι θα ήταν εύκολο ή όχι;

    J.D.: Τι σύμπτωση να με ρωτήσεις για αυτό! Ολοκλήρωσα το πρώτο μου μυθιστόρημα με συνεργασία το 2017. Ονομάζεται Fatal  Throne και αφορά τις έξι συζύγους του Ερρίκου του 8ου της Αγγλίας. (Shwartz & Wade Books, Μάιος 2018) Δούλεψα με υπέροχους συγγραφείς: M.T. Anderson, Candace Fleming, Stephanie Hemphill, Deborah Hopkinson, Lisa Ann Sandell και Linda Sue Park και αγάπησα απόλυτα αυτό  το έργο.

    Θα θέλαμε να μάθουμε περισσότερα για το τελευταίο σας βιβλίο.

    J.D.: Fatal Throne (Ο θανάσιμος θρόνος) λέει την ιστορία των έξι συζύγων του Henry VIII, σε αφήγηση πρώτου προσώπου. Η ιστορία κάθε συζύγου αρχίζει στο σημείο της καταδίκης της -την στιγμή που συνειδητοποιεί  ότι βρίσκεται  σε μεγάλο κίνδυνο– και από τότε μεταφέρεται μπροστά και πίσω στον χρόνο. Ο Ερρίκος μοιράζεται τις σκέψεις του με τον αναγνώστη ανάμεσα από την ιστορία της κάθε συζύγου.

    Είμαι η Άν του Κλέβ -η τέταρτη σύζυγος του Ερρίκου. Είναι αυτή που ο Ερρίκος χώρισε επειδή την έβρισκε άσχημη. Στην Άννα επέβαλλαν να συμφωνήσει με το διαζύγιο, αλλά ήταν έξυπνη, γενναία και έπαιξε καλά τα χαρτιά της, καταλήγοντας  σε γενναιόδωρη διευθέτηση διαζυγίου. Ο Ερρίκος την έκανε αδερφή του και κανόνισε  ώστε να λάβει χρήματα και περιουσία. Διατήρησε το κεφάλι της (τόσο κυριολεκτικά όσο και μεταφορικά), κράτησε τη θέση της στην αυλή  και έζησε  περισσότερο από τον Ερρίκο και όλες τις άλλες συζύγους του.

    Καθώς εργαζόμουν στην ιστορία της Άννας με έκανε να σκέφτομαι τα ζητήματα της ομορφιάς. Τι είναι η ομορφιά; Ποιος είναι όμορφος; Ποιος μπορεί να αποφασίσει αυτό; Αυτές οι ερωτήσεις με οδήγησαν στο τρέχον έργο μου -ένα βιβλίο που ονομάζεται STEPSISTER (Η Ετεροθαλής Αδελφή). Με γοητεύουν  τα παραμύθια, ειδικά οι  κακοποιοί  τους, και ανέκαθεν αναρωτήθηκα τι έγινε με τις  άσχημες ετεροθαλείς αδελφές της Σταχτοπούτας. Έτσι αποφάσισα να μάθω. Το  STEPSISTER  ξεκινά  από εκεί που τελειώνει η ιστορία της Σταχτοπούτας και ακολουθεί την ιστορία της Ισαβέλλας –μιας  από τις αδελφές. Είμαι πολύ περίεργη  να μάθω γιατί οι ετεροθαλείς αδελφές της  ήταν τόσο κακές, αν το μετάνιωσαν και αν αυτές -και εννοώ τα κορίτσια γενικότερα- μπορούν να αλλάξουν. Είμαι βαθιά στο πρώτο προσχέδιο  και αγαπώ αυτήν την ιστορία. Ανυπομονώ να μοιραστώ αυτήν  -και την Isabelle- με τους αναγνώστες μου!

    4.The Waterfire Saga

    Deep Blue (Book One of The Waterfire Saga)

    Serafina, daughter of Isabella, Queen of Miromara, has been raised with the expectation – and burden – that she will someday become the ruler of the oldest civilization of the merfolk. One the eve of her Dokimi ceremony, which will determine if she is worthy of the crown, Sera is haunted by a strange dream that foretells the return of an ancient evil. But her nightmare is forgotten the next day as she diligently practices her songspell; eagerly anticipates a reunion with her best friend, Neela; and anxiously worries about Mahdi, the crown prince of Matali, and whether his feelings toward her and their future betrothal have changed. Most of all, she worries about not living up to her mother’s hopes.

    The Dokimi proceeds, a dazzling display of majesty and might, until a shocking turn of events interrupts it: an assassin’s arrow wounds Isabella. The realm falls into chaos, and Serafina’s darkest premonitions are confirmed. Now she and Neela must embark on a quest to find the assassin’s master and prevent a war between mer nations. Their search will lead them to other mermaid heroines scattered across the six seas. Together they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood as they uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world’s very existence.

    Rogue Wave (Book Two of The Waterfire Saga)

    Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled—powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six.

    Serafina  believes her talisman is submerged inside an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she  is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar….and the pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating.

    Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world. But they find her story outlandish: a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of the fearsome razormouth dragons.

    As they hunt for their talismans, both Serfina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn’t know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave.

    You can buy the book at Amazon, Barnes&Nobles.

    Dark Tide (Book Three of The Waterfire Saga)

    Serafina, once a lost and uncertain princess, is now the confident leader of the Black Fins, a ragtag group of soldiers trying to sabotage her traitorous uncle and his death riders. While Vallerio and his wife plot their takeover of all the mer realms, Sera works on enlisting allies for battle.

    Meanwhile, her mermaid friends face challenges of their own. Ling is in the hold of Rafe Mfeme’s trawler, on her way to a prison camp. Becca meets up with Astrid and learns why the Ondalinian mermaid is always so angry: she is hiding a shameful secret. Ava can’t return home because death riders await her arrival. Time is running out in their search for the four talismans that still must be found if they are to defeat the ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis.

    In Cerulea, it is getting more and more difficult for Mahdi, Serafina’s betrothed, to keep up the ruse that he is in love with the treacherous Lucia Volnero. If anyone becomes suspicious, his life—and all of Sera’s hopes—will be extinguished.

    Political intrigue, dangerous liaisons, and spine-tingling suspense swirl like a maelstrom in this penultimate book in the WaterFire Saga.

    You can buy the book at Amazon, Barnes&Nobles.

    Sea Spell (Book Four of The Waterfire Saga)

    Orfeo has waited thousands of years for his time to come. Soon his descendant, Astrid, a mermaid fierce and true, will join him at Shadow Manse, his stronghold. Will she succeed in taking his powerful talisman, a black pearl? Or will he succeed in persuading her to accept her birthright, and turn against her friends?

    Ava is tracking another talisman in the swamps of the Mississippi. To get it she will have to face down the murderous Okwa Naholo spirits. For once, her unseeing eyes might be an advantage, because no mer who looks upon the creatures lives to tell the tale.

    Serafina, Becca, Ling, and Neela are in the Kargjord with the rest of the Black Fin resistance and goblin troops, preparing for war on two fronts. Will Sera ever see her beloved home – and her beloved Mahdi – again, or will the Volneros take over the mer realms while Orfeo takes on the gods themselves?

    Nothing less than the fate of the underwater world is at stake in this breathtaking finale of Jennifer Donnelly’s WaterFire Saga.

    5. Revolution

    As you might expect from the title, the book is about a revolution. On one level, it’s about the French Revolution and one of its smallest victims. On another level, it’s about the revolution inside, about the changes we as human beings go through as we struggle to make sense of our world and its tragedies.

    Without giving too much away, the story centers on two girls – one who lives in present day Brooklyn and has suffered the loss of her younger brother. And one who lived in 18th Century Paris and witnessed one of the worst crimes of the French Revolution. Their stories converge when Andi, the Brooklyn girl, travels to Paris and finds a diary hidden inside an old guitar case that belonged to Alex – the French girl.

    Here’s how we described the story on the book jacket:

    BROOKLYN: Andi Alpers is on the edge. She’s angry at her father for leaving, angry at her mother for not being able to cope, and heartbroken by the loss of her younger brother, Truman. Rage and grief are destroying her. And she’s about to be expelled from Brooklyn Heights’ most prestigious private school when her father intervenes. Now Andi must accompany him to Paris for winter break.

    PARIS: Alexandrine Paradis lived over two centuries ago. She dreamed of making her mark on the Paris stage, but a fateful encounter with a doomed prince of France cast her in a tragic role she didn’t want—and couldn’t escape.

    Two girls, two centuries apart. One never knowing the other. But when Andi finds Alexandrine’s diary, she recognizes something in her words and is moved to the point of obsession. There’s comfort and distraction for Andi in the journal’s antique pages—until, on a midnight journey through the catacombs of Paris, Alexandrine’s words transcend paper and time, and the past becomes suddenly, terrifyingly present.

    6. The Tea Rose Trilogy (The Tea Rose, The Winter Rose, The Wild Rose)

    The Tea Rose

    East London, 1888 – a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at night. Where shining hopes meet the darkest truths.

    Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, a bright, defiant young woman dares to dream of a life beyond tumbledown wharves, gaslit alleys, and the grim and crumbling dwellings of the poor.

    Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger’s son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

    But Fiona’s plans are shattered when the actions of a dark and brutal man force her to flee London for New York. There, her indomitable spirit – and the ghosts of her past – propel her rise from a modest West Side shop front to the top of Manhattan’s tea trade.

    Fiona’s old ghosts do not rest quietly, however, and to silence them, she must venture back to the London of her childhood, where a deadly confrontation with her past becomes the key to her future.

    The Tea Rose is a towering old-fashioned story, imbued with a modern sensibility, of a family’s destruction, of murder and revenge, of love lost and won again, and of one determined woman’s quest to survive and triumph.

    Authentic and moving, The Tea Rose is an unforgettable novel – one certain to take its place beside such enduring epics as A Woman of Substance, The Thornbirds, and The Shell Seekers.

    You can buy the book at Amazon, Barnes&Nobles.

    The Winter Rose

    The Winter Rose, second book in The Tea Rose trilogy, reunites readers with themuch-loved Finnegan family. Beginning where The Tea Roseended, on the river Thames, the novel follows the story of Charlie Finnegan – now Sid Malone – and an intriguing new female character – IndiaSelwyn Jones.

    The year is 1900 and the dangerous streets of East London are no place for a wellbred woman. But India Selwyn Jones is headstrong: she has trained as one of a new breed, a woman doctor, and is determined to practice where the need is greatest.

    It is on these grim streets where India meets – and saves the life of – London’s most notorious gangster, Sid Malone. Hard, violent, devastatingly attractive, Malone is the opposite of India’s cool, aristocratic fiancé, a rising star in the House of Commons. Though Malone represents all she despises, India finds herself unwillingly drawn ever closer to him – enticed by his charm, intrigued by his hidden, mysterious past.

    The Winter Rose brings the beginning of the turbulent twentieth century vividly to life, drawing the reader into its wretched underworld, its privileged society, and the shadowland between the two, where the strict rules of the time blur into secret passions.

    You can buy the book at Amazon , Barnes&Nobles.

    The Wild Rose

    London, 1914. World War I looms on the horizon, women are fighting for the right to vote, and explorers are pushing the limits of endurance in the most forbidding corners of the earth. In this volatile time live three exceptional people:

    • Willa Alden, a passionate mountain climber who lost her leg while summiting Kilimanjaro with Seamus Finnegan, and who will never forgive him for saving her life.
    • Seamus Finnegan, a polar explorer who tries to forget Willa as he courts a beautiful young school teacher back home in England.
    • Max von Brandt, a handsome German sophisticate who moves in high society London, but has a secret agenda.

    Seamus Finnegan and Max von Brandt both loved Willa Alden, and both men lost her. Neither expects to ever see her again, but when a catastrophic event calls Willa home to London, expectations are smashed, promises broken, and none of the three will ever be the same. As the last golden days of the Summer of 1914 give way to the gathering clouds of war, Willa, Seamus, and Max find their lives forever intertwined in a lethal web of forbidden loves, hidden loyalties, and dangerous lies.

    The Wild Rose is part of the sweeping, multi-generational saga that began with The Tea Rose and continued with The Winter Rose. Many beloved characters from both books continue their adventures in The Wild Rose. With myriad twists and turns, thrilling cliffhangers, and fabulous period detail and atmosphere, The Wild Roseprovides a highly satisfying conclusion to an unforgettable trilogy.

    7. A Northern Light

    It is 1906 and Mattie Gokey is trying to learn how to stand up like a man — even though she’s a sixteen-year-old girl. At her summer job at a resort on Big Moose Lake in the Adirondack mountains, she will earn enough money to make something of her life.That money could be a dowry to wed the handsome but dull Royal Loomis. It could save her father’s brokeback farm. Or it might buy her a train ticket to New York City and college and a life that she can barely allow herself to imagine.But Mattie’s worries and plans are cast into a cold light when the drowned body of Grace Brown turns up – a young woman who gave Mattie a packet of love letters, letters that convince Mattie that the drowning was no accident.Inspired by the sensational Chester Gillette murder case of 1906, which was also the basis for Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy and the film A Place in the Sun, this story evokes novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, and other classics that hark back to times of lost innocence.
